The bibliographic history of this piece is slightly more complex than it should be. In 1936, students of the Chicago School of Printing reprinted two works by Douglas C. McMurtrie, Notes on the History of the Ludlow and Notes on the History of the Elrod. The colophon for both of these works claims that each appeared originally in the journal Share Your Knowledge Review. Vol. 17, No. 4 (February, 1936). (San Francisco: The International Association of Printing House Craftsment, Inc., 1936). However, an examination of the Table of Contents of that issue of that journal indicates that only Notes on the History of the Ludlow appeared in it. I would guess that the Elrod piece appeared in some other number of this journal, but that is only a guess (I have not yet been able to examine the volumes around 1936).

A presumed reprint done in 1936 by students of the Chicago School of Printing.
The 1936 printing by students of the Chicago School of Printing of McMurtrie's Notes on the History of the Elrod was done without copyright notice, and so under the requirements in place at the time it passed into the public domain upon initial publication.
